Southern rock Music began as a cultural formation that displayed racially and politically progressive views in the post-civil rights South in 1970. Southern rock music was both a reflection of, and a response to, the changing way of life for southerners as a result of the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement forced many in the South to reexamine traditions and regional identities. As those in the South reexamined their southern identities, southern rock bands emerged and offered a way to embrace southern pride, while rejecting traditional racist views, through the cultural form of music. As a cultural formation, southern rock bands not only demonstrated progressive racial views, they also demonstrated progressive political views through the lyrics and subjects of their songs, as well as by actively participating in the 1976 presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter. The cultural form of southern rock music is political in that many songs address social issues like racial injustice, poverty, gun control, domestic violence, and drug and alcohol abuse.
Southern rock bands, such as The Allman Brothers Band, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, responded to the political and social changes in the South brought forth by the civil rights movement by reconciling pride for southern heritage with progressive racial views through their music. The legendary Southern rock and roll band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, did not emerge from the urban ghettos of such cities as London or New York, instead it came out of the rural South. This “rough and tough and plenty mean” Southern band utilized regional cultural traits to become one of the best hard rock bands that the South ever produced
The rise of rock ’n’ roll in the mid-1950s transformed the landscape of American popular music, further cementing the popularity of southern-derived styles ultimately derived from the blues and country music. Rock and Roll Bands transformed the teenager into both a marketing concept and a cultural icon. If you were young in the 1950s in the United States, no matter where you lived, no matter what your race or class, rock ’n’ roll was your music. Rock ’n’ roll records were played for dances at inner-city, primarily black, public schools, for parties at predominantly white suburban private schools, and for socials in rural settings catering to young people. The “King of Rock ’n’ Roll” was Elvis Presley. His first recording was” I’ll Never Stand in Your Way”(1953). Elvis Presley holds records for the most Top Forty and Top Ten hits, the most consecutive #1 hits, and the most weeks at #1
When in the 1960’s East-German groups began to play the so-called “Beatmusik”, the government feared that the American life-style would be imported through the music. First attempts to suppress the whole thing failed, and so, in the 70’s, the government tried to canalize the movement by institutionalization and strict censorship. While at the surface the censorship was mostly successful, the sensibility of the audience for small deviations from the prescribed norm increased in the same degree as the possibility for such deviations were curtailed, and thus the political power of the music remained unbroken.
In the last years of the German Democratic Republic the East German Rock music went almost out of control. Finally the music of the West seemed to be the lesser evil: To distract from the 1968 student riots in Germany, France and Italy had created a class of young, intellectual continental listeners, while nuclear weapons, pollution and war inspired protests and activism. Music had taken a turn towards electronic avant-garde in the mid-1950s.
These factors all laid the scene for the explosion in what came to be termed krautrock, which arose at the first major German rock festival in 1968 at Essen. Like their American and British counterparts, German rock musicians played a kind of psychedelia. In contrast, however, there was no attempt to reproduce the effects of drugs, but rather an innovative fusion of psychedelia and the electronic avant-garde. That same year, 1968, saw the foundation of the Zodiak Free Arts Lab in Berlin by Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Conrad Schnitzler, which further popularized the psychedelic-rock sound in the German mainstream.
Originally Krautrock was a form of Free art which meant you could receive Krautrock bands’ records for free at Free Art Fairs.
